WeFabricate exists to engage with the wider community in a creative and innovative manner, and to encourage and enable the use of making as an enriching activity. Follow us on Facebook for all the latest updates.
The Quilt of Memories is the first WeFabricate project. It was inspired by Emily’s involvement in finishing off Su Elliott’s heirloom quilt. The stories held within each piece of fabric made WeFabricate want to ask the wider Bath community for their material memories.
The heirloom quilt, displayed in the Bath Central Library display case until the 9th of March 2015, has a myriad of different fabrics: school uniforms, hand-me-down pyjamas, curtain fabric and disco dresses.
These humble, timeless vignettes are what makes this quilt so precious. These stories are also what inspired the project: Emily is making a stitched paper quilt of written stories – sourced from this community’s memories.
Here’s how you can get involved:
- Visit the library, pick up a paper hexagon (available on the front desk) and write a thought inspired by a fabric. It could be a memory, a feeling, a description. Then post the memory in the box and become part of a new paper quilt.
- Follow this facebook link and post a memory on the wall or if you would prefer to remain anonymous, send it in an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
- Keep an eye on the facebook page for updates, coming soon, some free drop-in workshops to teach the basics of hand piecing.
- Come along to Story Friday, Quilt of Stories, Friday 13th March, 8pm at Burdall’s Yard on the London Road, BA1 5NH
